Quilt Festival at Amy's Creative Side-My Art Quilt

I am entering my quilted portrait of my Dad, the Sailor at .Amy's Creative Side Quilt Festival  I have not entered anything in the Quilt Festival previously so thought it would be a fun thing to do. There are many categories and many beautiful quilts for our eye candy. Sure hope you will hop over and check them out. Here is Dad's portrait quilt...He was about 28 in this picture and  in World War II. He lived to be 98 1/2 and lived on his own until the last few months. We lost him in January 2012 and I still miss him a lot.

Imagine My Surprise!!

I got the March newsletter this morning from Quilt University and always enjoy reading Carol Miller's thoughts on any number of subjects. Then I decided to go directly to Quilt University.com and check out the new classes and Student Commons to see what was posted on there. I looked at the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival pictures, checked out the Orchid Extravaganza and then decided to look at the Eleventh Annual Virtual Quilt Show from QU.  Can you imagine my shock when I scrolled down looking at the winners in the Applique catagory?  My Dad's fabric portrait was one of the 5 winners and one of two with Honorable Mention!!! Honestly, I do not even remember entering my piece for consideration in this contest, honestly!!  I am completely shocked and it is such an honor and my Dad would be so proud of this. Those of you that read my blog know that Dad had passed away in January of this year.  I'm sitting here crying right now, this has really been an emotional start for my day but I'm so, so proud and I thank everyone who voted in the virtual QU quilt show.  Whew, I am overwhelmed but so, so honored...sew until next time, I hope you have a Stitches kind of day........

We Remember Veteran's Day

Today, we remember and honor all veteran's who have fought for our country and our freedom. I want to honor my Dad today, he fought in WWII, in the Navy as a SeaBee. I am posting some pictures of him and some you might have already seen in previous posts. In the photo and fabric portrait in his uniform, he was about 28 years old and was taken before he went overseas. The small photo was taken a year or so ago. Dad is in the nursing home right now but working very hard to get his strength back so he can go back to his home. And I know that he will be home before very long.  My husband was in the Army during the Korean War as were many more relatives and friends. Without these veteran's, our country could be a very different place for us to live and enjoy our freedom. So, let us salute the men and women who have served our country, in war and in peace.

I am the Winner for the March Give-A-Way on the Raspberry Rabbit Blog!!

I cannot believe it!!! But Michelle May informed me that I had won her March Give-a-Way and I won these two beautiful books!! I'm am so excited about these books, everyone who knows me, knows how much I like books too!! They will be a very nice additon to my library and I can't wait to receive them..and rest assured, I will be sharing them with anyone wishing to drool......Please check out Michelle's blog, The Raspberry Rabbits, (http://theraspberryrabbits.blogspot.com)/ it's really a neat blog and she has a free BOM that she is doing for us too! It's cute hand-embroidered heart designs that will make a lovely quilt when we are done with them. And she has rabbits, sometimes they are nice and sometimes they are naughty, naughty!! But cute! Wow, March has been a good month for me.

I won the Quilting Gallery contest for "My Dad, the Sailor" fabric portrait, a couple of weeks ago and just received that book in the mail yesterday. It looks like it's going to be a good read too!!   Where is all this Good Luck coming from???  It's sure is nice, and I would never look a gift-horse in the mouth....have you ever heard that old saying??? On that note, I'm getting out of here because I'm having a very good "Stitches" kind of day and I'm going to make the most of it,,bye for now..

My Dad, the Sailor on the Quilting Gallery

(The voting is over so I have edited this entry about the voting.) This is the fabric portrait of my Dad that I entered on the quiltinggallery.com in this week's contest. I took a Marilyn Belford class on Quilt University and it was a very good experience. I had looked at this class for several years and wanted to take it but just didn't know if I would be successful in taking a class like that over the computer. I got a lot of help from Marilyn and it was a great class. It was a challenging learning experience and I'm so glad that I did it. I bought a bundle of hand-dyed flesh colored fat quarters at the AQS show in Des Moines and used them for all of the face. My Dad will be 98 in June and he really likes the portrait. He lives independently and is sharp as a tack. He told me this picture was taken in Gulfport, Ms.  before he was shipped overseas in WWII. He was 28 years old and served the Navy as a Seabee (26th Construction Battalion) and ended up in Guadalcanal for over a year. My main reason for doing this was to honor my Dad for his military service. Now I really think I should do another portrait of him at this age, hmmmmm we'll see.

This is the actual picture that I worked from for my project. Really, handsome guy, I think, but I know that I am prejudice.
